The choice is large, but not every “airport hotel” is really at the terminal — some are only reachable by shuttle. Right at Terminal 1: Hilton Frankfurt Airport

Probably the most convenient hotel for travellers departing from Terminal 1 is the Hilton Frankfurt Airport. It’s in The Squaire complex above the long-distance station and offers direct access to Terminal 1. So you walk from the hotel into the terminal without stepping outside and — not to be underestimated — just as directly to the long-distance station if you’re arriving or continuing by ICE.

Who is it worth it for? Anyone with an early flight from Terminal 1, rail travellers with a connecting flight and business travellers who want short walks. In the same complex there’s also a Hilton Garden Inn as a slightly cheaper sister option.

At Terminal 2 (and with the Sky Line to all terminals): Sheraton

The Sheraton Frankfurt Airport Hotel & Conference Center is a classic. It offers direct pedestrian access to Terminal 1 via a covered, glazed skywalk. From there you reach Terminal 2 via the Sky Line train. That makes the Sheraton flexibly connected, whichever terminal you’re flying from.

It’s also a large conference hotel — handy if you have a conference or meeting at the airport and don’t want to travel into the city first. If you prefer something quieter and smaller, this is less the place for you; but the connections and infrastructure are spot on.

In my experience it mainly comes down to two questions: which terminal are you flying from, and how much buffer do you have?

• Early flight from Terminal 1, short walks: Hilton Frankfurt Airport (in The Squaire, direct terminal access).
• Flexible, conference or Terminal 2: Sheraton with skywalk to T1 and Sky Line to T2.
• Pure transfer between international flights: My Cloud in the transit area — only sensible if you’re not entering the country.
• Budget, relaxed evening-before arrival: a shuttle hotel nearby — check the shuttle times in advance.

A few extra tips:

• Check the terminal: make sure which terminal your flight leaves from, and choose the hotel accordingly. Switching between terminals costs time.
• Breakfast times: for very early flights, it’s worth checking whether the hotel offers breakfast early enough or a to-go option.
• Noise: airport hotels are usually well sound-insulated, but light sleepers should ask for a quieter room away from the rail or apron side.
• Book early: during trade-fair periods the airport hotels sell out quickly and get expensive.
