Day Trip to the Rheingau: Rüdesheim by Train & Cable Car

When Frankfurters want to spend a day by the water and in the green, many head into the Rheingau. Rüdesheim am Rhein, the heart of the region, is easily reached from Frankfurt by train and combines exactly what makes a lovely outing: vineyards, a famous cable car, a historic view and cosy wine taverns. Getting there by train

You reach Rüdesheim from Frankfurt conveniently on the RheingauLinie, which runs from Frankfurt main station all the way to Koblenz. During the day the trains run hourly, in part every half hour, and get you to Rüdesheim in about an hour. The route itself is already a pleasure, as it runs along the Rhine and through the vineyards for long stretches.

My tip: don’t buy an expensive single ticket, but check for a suitable RMV fare offer or a regional-day ticket — for groups or families in particular it becomes considerably cheaper. Rüdesheim station is close to the town, and from there you’re quickly in the old town and at the valley station of the cable car.

• Avoid the crush: the Drosselgasse is very busy in high season. If you want quiet, go to calmer wine places.
• Comfortable shoes: sensible up in the Niederwald and for short walks.
