Breakfast with a View in Frankfurt: Rooftops, Skyline & the Main

The finest coffee of the day, for me, is the first one — and when the towers of the skyline are catching the morning light or the Main is glinting in front of the terrace, an ordinary breakfast turns into a small event. Frankfurt offers more of this than people assume: rooftop restaurants that genuinely open in the morning, hotel terraces with a skyline panorama, and a handful of cafés right on the water. The catch is knowing which places actually serve breakfast — because the city’s famous high-rise bars almost all open only in the evening. Below are the addresses where a morning with a view really works, with times, prices and a few honest caveats.

Above the rooftops: a rooftop breakfast and a skyline brunch

If you want to breakfast above the rooftops in the middle of the city, the place to go is Occhio d’Oro, the rooftop restaurant of the Flemings Selection Hotel Frankfurt-City at Eschenheimer Tor 2. Since autumn 2023 breakfast has been served up on the roof terrace — a buffet with a direct view of the banking towers, and a historic paternoster lift carries you up in style. By day and in the evening the kitchen leans Italian, with modern takes on Tuscan-Florentine classics; at the weekend there is also a brunch with a skyline view. The Eschenheimer Tor U-Bahn station (U1, U2, U3, U8) is practically at the door — you can hardly get more central.

A little further west, in the striking One Forty West tower at Senckenberganlage 13, the oben — Restaurant & Skybar of the Meliá Frankfurt City occupies the 15th and 16th floors. During the week it’s a purely evening venue, but on Sundays it hosts the Skyline Brunch from noon to 3 p.m.: a Mediterranean buffet, a live pasta station and a DJ, with the whole skyline stretching away to the Taunus hills through the floor-to-ceiling windows or from the terrace. The classic brunch package costs €69 per person and includes a welcome drink, hot drinks, juices and water (as of 2026). A category of its own is THE ROOF at the b’mine Frankfurt Airport hotel (Georg-Baumgarten-Straße 1, in Gateway Gardens right by the airport). The restaurant sits on the 12th floor and — unlike almost every other high-rise venue in town — serves breakfast every day: weekdays from 6.30 to 10 a.m., weekends and public holidays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., for €28 per person (as of 2026), with a glass of sparkling wine thrown in at the weekend. Honestly, the terrace looks out first and foremost over the runways — this is a breakfast for plane-spotters and for anyone with an early flight, with the downtown skyline as a distant silhouette on the horizon on clear days. For a relaxed start before departure, though, it’s hard to beat.

Right on the Main: breakfast and brunch by the water

My favourite for a down-to-earth breakfast with a water view is the Mainkai Café at Mainkai 15, just a few steps from the cathedral and the Römer, directly on the northern bank of the Main. It’s open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the breakfast menu is generous, and it runs from the classics all the way to halloumi and sucuk. You sit practically on the river, looking across the water to Sachsenhausen. The place is small — around 40 seats — so on sunny weekends it’s best to reserve in advance by phone.

Further east, at the Osthafen in the shadow of the European Central Bank, sits Oosten (Mayfarthstraße 4) right on the water — “by the river, with the skyline in the background”, as the owners describe it themselves. At the weekend there’s breakfast from a dedicated menu, plus a sprawling terrace on the Main with a view of the ECB tower and the skyline behind it. The opening hours do change with the season, though — during the week Oosten tends to open only in the afternoon — so a quick look at the website before you set off is worth it.

Somewhat smarter, and with a panorama terrace in the heart of the city, is MainNizza at Untermainkai 17, named after the neighbouring subtropical Nizza garden on the riverbank. One thing to know: it opens only at 11.30 a.m. So this is not an early-morning breakfast, but rather a wonderfully late brunch or a lunch with a direct view of the Main and the boats gliding past. Being honest: which high-rise venues are shut in the morning

A common misconception: Frankfurt’s famous high-rise and rooftop bars are almost without exception evening venues. The MAIN TOWER Restaurant & Lounge on the 53rd floor (Neue Mainzer Straße 52–58), for instance, opens only Tuesday to Saturday from 6 p.m. — there’s no breakfast there. The 22nd Lounge & Bar in the Eurotheum, the NFT Skybar in the ONE tower and Lili’s Rooftop at the Sofitel on Opernplatz likewise get going only in the afternoon or evening. So don’t count on wandering into one of these addresses in the morning.

If it’s really only the view you’re after, rather than the food, head up to the Main Tower observation deck during the day (around 200 metres above the city). You can’t breakfast up there, but the panorama is the best in town — and a coffee before or after is easy to arrange. The budget option: a picnic with a skyline view

A view needn’t cost much. Grab a fresh pastry — the famous cinnamon rolls from Zeit für Brot at Oeder Weg 15 (open from 7 a.m.), for example — and take it down to the riverbank. Especially lovely is the lawn along Schaumainkai below the Museumsufer on the Sachsenhausen side: the river in front of you, the towers behind it. If you fancy something greener and higher, climb up to the Lohrberg in the north-east (the Seckbach district), Frankfurt’s only vineyard. The Lohrberger Hang is the smallest single vineyard site in the Rheingau region — only Riesling grows here — and from the hilltop you have the whole skyline laid out as a panoramic backdrop. A packed breakfast on the grass in the first sunshine is a real treat up here; the Lohrbergschänke serves Frankfurt home cooking and its own Riesling from around midday, though it doesn’t do an early breakfast. A coffee to go, a croissant, the towers in the morning haze: no Frankfurt day begins more cheaply or more contentedly.

A few things make the difference. Reserve at the weekend, especially for the Sunday brunch above the rooftops and for the small café terraces by the water. When you book, ask for a table on the skyline or water side — not every seat has the best view. And keep an eye on the forecast: terraces and the riverbank live on sunshine, whereas in the rain the glazed high-rise restaurants are the smarter choice. My own morning would look like this: down to the Museumsufer early with those cinnamon rolls, watching the city wake up in peace — and saving the Skyline Brunch at oben or the rooftop breakfast at Occhio d’Oro for a special Sunday. That way even the first coffee becomes the highlight of the day.
